The Juiy 9, 2025 San Francisco Surgical will host “Accelerating Health Care with Artificial Intelligence” Our speaker will be Eric Karl, the technical lead for the ARIES AI-accelerated radiology project at Northwestern Medicine. He previously worked at Microsoft and Google,and now is an expert working at Northwestern Medicine’s Research and Development team to implement cutting edge applications of AI in healthcare. Social hour at 6pm, talk at 7pm, dinner to follow.

December 2023 Meeting – Dr. Joshua Mezrich
Speaker: Joshua Mezrich MD, FACS
Professor of Surgery
Division of Multiorgan Transplantation
University of Wisconsin Department of Surgery

President Mahanty invited Dr. Joshua Mezrich to speak at the December meeting.
Dr. Mezrich is a transplant surgeon and the author of the best-selling novel – When Death Becomes Life – Notes from a Transplant Surgeon. He is a graduate of Weill Cornell Medical College. He completed surgical residency at the University of Chicago and his research at Massachusetts General Hospital. In addition, he runs an immunology lab at the University of Wisconsin and has a podcast (The Sett) where he interviews leaders in Transplantation.
Dr. Mezrich is the author of When Death Becomes Life.

Dr. Harish Mahanty is the New SF Surgical President
Dr. Mahanty, Transplant Surgeon at CPMC, was elected President of the San Francisco Surgical for the 2023-24 year. He completed medical school at UCLA, residency in the UCSF Eastbay Program, and his Abdominal Transplant Fellowship at UCSF.

For his first meeting, he led an active discussion with the membership on how to re-invigorate the Society.

Dr. Kristan Staudenmayer is Elected President of San Francisco Surgical for 2022-23 Year.
Dr. Kristan Staudenmayer is a double-boarded surgeon specializing in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Texas at Southwestern Medical School in 1999 and completed her residency in General Surgery at Parkland Hospital in 2006. During her post-graduate training, she conducted NIH T32-funded research at Harborview Hospital, focusing on the effects of innate immunity on trauma. She furthered her Trauma and Surgical Critical Care training at San Francisco General Hospital and joined Stanford in 2008. Dr. Staudenmayer has a robust research program and clinical practice, and her interests contribute to Stanford’s multi-disciplinary approach to surgical trauma management.
Dr. Staudenmayer has asked Dr. Carolyn Dacey Seib to serve as the program director.

SF Police Chief Scott Spoke at September 2022 Meeting about Mass Shootings and Collaboration with Community Services
And President Andre Campbell’s invitation, Chief William Scott was our honored guest at the September 2022 meeting. He spoke about the proliferation of guns, including ghost guns, on the streets of cities around the US. The number of mass shootings has gone up around the country.




March 2022 meeting will be in person.
The March 23, 2022 meeting will be in person. Hopefully, we will have a good showing. Standard COVID protocols apply. We encourage members to bring guests.
Dr. Andre Campbell Begins His Presidency.

Dr. Andre Campbell began his Presidency of the San Francisco Surgical at the October 2021 meeting. He took over from Dr. Laurence Yee.

San Francisco Surgical Reopening Meeting
President Laurence Yee and Annette Bronstein re-initiated in-person meetings by organizing the July meeting at One Market in San Francisco. There was a strong turn-out with everyone excited to be meeting in person again.
